Forest Research in Manipur is being carried
out
by the Research and Training Division of the Manipur
Forest Department under the Working Plan,
Research and Training Circle
Forestry Research are carried out under 3 main
category heads such as:
a) Forestry Research to be carried out by the State
Forest Department
b) Forestry Research to be carried out jointly
by State & ICFRE and
c) Forestry Research to be carried out by
ICFRE & other organizations.
ONGOING RESEARCH WORKS:
1. FORESTRY PLANTING STOCK IMPROVEMENT RESEARCH:
With the increase in population, the demand of
forest produce is increasing day by day whereas our
forest area remains constant or decreasing.
Therefore, the need to use better planting stock to
improve forest productivity to meet the requirements.
Therefore, after selection of
provenances and selection of the plus trees, standardization
of planting techniques followed by
testing of progeny for adaptability and releasing of
superior stock for planting is being tried.
The assets thus developed under Research in
collaboration with the Institute of Rain and Moist
Deciduous Forest Research (IFMDR), Jorhat are:
i.
Clonal seed Orchard (CSO) of Gmelina arborea
and Tectona grandis established
at Luwangsangbam.
ii. Seedling seed Orchard (SSO) of Gmelina arborea
at Luwangsangbam.
iii. Seed production Area (SPA) of Pinus kesia at
Khonghampat.
2. FOREST PRODUCTIVITY RESEARCH WORKS:
The productivity of Indian Forest varies from 0.5
to 0.7 cum per ha per annum against world average of
2.5 cum per ha per annum. There is requirement for
carrying out trials on various species to determine
the species which are economically viable without
affecting the structure of the existing resource
base.
Research carried out under the topic are:
i.
Clonal Trial of Poplar (Populus deltoides)
ii.. Provenance trial of Pawlownia fortunii
iii. ETP trial of Poplar
iv. Plant propagation trial of Poplar, Pawlownia
fortunii
v. Agri-forestry Research in the farmers field using
Pawlownia fortunii
3. MEDICINAL PLANTS PLANTATION TRIALS UNDER NTFP
RESEARCH
i. Medicinal plants Garden developed
at Luwangsangbam and Tharosibi
ii. Cultivation Trial of Rauwolfia serpentina at
Luwangsangbam and Karong.
iii. Plant propagation Trial for NTFP including
medicinal plants
4. RESEARCH CENTRES:
The Research and Training Division varry out
research at 5(five) centres. Following are the
existing Research Centres:
i. Forest Research Centre at Khonghampat
ii. Botanical Garden cum Research Centre at
Luwangsangbam.
iii. Forest Research Centre at Tharosibi
iv. Pine Seed Production Area at Khonghampat.
5. OTHER ASSETS CREATED UNDER THE DIVISION
i. Botanical Garden cum Research centre at
Luwangsangbam
ii. Arboretum at Koirengei and
iii. Modern Nursery with Greenhouse facility at
Mantrupukhri
